California passes hands-free driving law
California joins a number of US states that require hands-free phone usage while driving. Talking on the phone while driving is a distraction and holding the phone in one hand (or propped against your shoulder) is a security risk. This is now also a traffic violation in a couple of US states and more are expected to join in the ban.
The argument is still running hot though about if the act of talking on the phone is a traffic risk, not just the pushing of buttons and textmessaging. Oddly enough, texting on a Blackberry while driving is legal in California. On top of this the fine is currently set at $20, which makes it a tame law indeed.
At Bluetooth Earbuds we feel the hand held ban is good and should be more strictly enforced. As should texting and even eating hamburgers while driving. Not just in USA but globally. This is not only about being a risk factor to others in traffic, it is very much about how poorly distracted people drive which causes traffic jams and adds to pollution, stress and irritation.
Whatever you are holding while driving, your performance will be much lower. We do not think a ban on talking on the phone should (or could) be imposed but handheld talking certainly should. There are alternatives and bluetooth handfree operation of almost all current phones works flawlessly. If you haven´t got one today, get a bluetooth headset and experience a new level of freedom. On the street, in the office, and in your car.
